In addition to accepting out-of-state applicants to the Institutes on Engineering and Information Technology, the Governor's Institutes of Vermont has announced that Vermont will welcome up to 20 out of state high school students grades 9 – 11 interested in the arts to the Vermont Governor’s Institute on the Arts. From June 21 – July 5, 100 students and their faculty will challenge themselves to explore artistic excellence in the areas of: music, performance, composition, painting, drawing, graphics, sculpture, writing, dance, choreography, and theater. The Institute will be at Castleton State College in Castleton, VT.
- Tuition: $2,000 for non-resident students, no additional fees, no financial aid available

In response to news of the elimination of the Pennsylvania Governor's Schools of Excellence for 2009, Jean Olson, Executive Director of the Governor's Institutes of Vermont, has announced that two Vermont Governor's Institutes -- the Institute on Engineering and the Institute on Information Technology -- can accept out-of-state applicants, including Pennsylvania applicants interested in participating. The Institutes are both held in Burlington, easily accessible by public transportation. Pennsylvania's Governor's Schools of Excellence may go the way of the South Carolina Governor's School at the College of Charleston and the New Jersey Governor's School of the Arts if Pennsylvania Governor Rendell receives legislative support for his proposed 2009-2010 budget. Several news sources have reported that the governor's proposed budget eliminates all eight Governor's Schools of Excellence.

The 2009 Annual Meeting of the National Conference of Governor's Schools will be held October 22-24 in Burlington, Vermont. The meeting will be jointly hosted by the New York State Summer School for the Arts and the Governor's Institutes of Vermont. The theme of this year's Annual Meeting is simply Challenges. "A history of NCoGS could be written in a few pages, but the true history of our Governor's Schools movement is the history that abides in each and every Governor's School in this country."
With these words, Lil Press and the National Conference of Governor's Schools embark on a project to compile a history of the Governor's School Movement: the development and evolution of governor's schools from their birth in North Carolina in 1963 to the present day. Lil, a founding member and board member emerita of the National Conference of Governor's Schools, is heading this effort.
